Holocaust Survivor speaks at LCC on 12th of Jan 2012

Tomi Reichental, Holocaust Survivor, visited Lucan Community College on Thursday 12th of January to speak to around 200 people - TY and Leaving Certificate History students, 5th Year German Students and some staff.

Tomi gave an excellent and very powerful talk, detailing his experiences in Bergen Belsen concentration camp during world war two. Following the talk, he signed copies of his book, launched just before Christmas, called  'I was a boy in Belsen'. Once students have read the book, we will publish their comments/reviews in this blog. Watch out for this later on in Jan/feb posts.

A lot of students/staff said Tomi's talk was unforgettable and believe they were very fortunate to have the opportunity to listen to one of the few remaining survivors from the concentration camps. Tomi's message was clear that we should all make sure 'The Holocaust' he experienced never happens again!

See links below to a written testimonial of Tomi's background and experiences (from the excellent Holocaust Education Trust website) and a link to details about his recently published book ' I was a boy in Belsen'. (You can read an extract from this.)

Revision. Dictatorship and Democracy 1. Germany.

A bit slow moving in places but a useful starting point for revising German History. These two clips come from the beginning of the series 'The World at War'. Episode 1 - A New Germany - explores the growth of Fascism and Dictatorship.

The 'Cold War'.

I found this quite useful short video, summarising some of the background to and key flashpoints of the 'Cold War'. I think it is a bit 'simplistic' in places but nevertheless a good starting point and includes interesting primary source footage. Let me know what you think of it.
